Artist: Yong Ching Sui (1975-2006)




Yong Ching Sui was born in Sibu, Sarawak in 1975. He graduated from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1998 with a Diploma in Fine Art. In August 2005, he discovered he had contracted kidney cancer, and he died in June, 2006.

Ching Sui exhibited his artworks regularly. Notable group exhibitions include "Aku99: Potret Diri at Galeri Peronas, KLCC, "Climbing the Wall" at Malaysian Art & Design Centre, K.L. and "Painted Memories" at Stonor Center, K.L. He also had solo exhibitions: "Works on Paper" at Alliance Francaise, Pulau Pinang (2000) and "Participation" at Space Spirit Studio, K.L. He was awarded Honourable Mention at the 1999 Philip Morris Malaysian Art Award and was a member of artist group Wall Lizards. As recently as July 2005, he participated in the group exhibition "Dream, Delirium + Face" at Reka Art Space.

Besides painting, Ching Sui's other interests include playing musical instruments. He also bakes delicious cakes. As a person, Ching Sui is always willing to help others and is a joy to be around his company.

As an artist, Ching Sui had firm belief in his practice. He truly devoted himself into the investigation that involved his subject matters, ideas and inspirations. He was a person of few words, but sensible and thoughtful. Throughout his works, you will discover that there is always a sense of humour present, and full of spirit.
